don't recall ever hearing why. The sludge settling in the pan idea makes sense, but if you drain it in the spring before you start it up for the first time, I don't see how that makes too much of a difference.
That said, I've heard to change it before storage so often that that's what I do if it's a planned length of down-time. BUT, I've had the car down for over 2 years on old/used oil and when I dropped the pan there was nothing showing that was a bad thing.
